With the rough, gritty appeal of a construction site, these riotous setups are decidedly anti-monument, reflecting the chaos and instability that encircles contemporary life through color and shape. The sculptures will celebrate a diverse range of approaches by the BIPOC gaze in an exhibition that combines practices from the arts and fashion to question traditional notions of Eurocentric fashion. MAXI will examine fashion from the Afro-Indigenous point of view, using radical imagination to recontextualize dress and adornment. By changing the gaze, clothing and decoration become not a means of domination and control but a tool of empowerment and joyful rebellion. MAXI will include photography, video, and ceramic sculptures. Within a theatrical immersive landscape, she will explore the tenuous line between memory, reality and fantasy. Miami Flyers is a performance that investigates being black and Haitian in Miami and the systems of oppression that affect the lives of Little Haiti residents, inspired by and focusing on specific incident in Miami’s Little Haiti neighborhood, the performance seeks to parse out complex civic issues regarding contested space and the use of dance, costume and music as a community resistance strategy developed in Haiti and in the Dominican Republic, Miami Flyers is a powerful and driven cross-disciplinary project with deeply transformative potential. The project expands questions of agency, and identity and uses Oquet’s, research-based works and site-specific installations through a political lens. Similar to the clowns I think that Gaga and Rara are very much a similar tool as a form of disobedience, one where the body is the end but also the means. They are self organized groups popping up all over the country in areas which are outside of society, away from the view of powerful people. Using dance, music colorful almost clownish custom to penetrate areas which were close, nonviolent direct action, introducing dance, sex, music and customs into the process of political organizing and action. Bringing this tradition to this area close to the Cathedral is sort of mapping spaces for “the others” . he Gagá is a street processions performed by Haitian and their Dominican-born descendants in the sugar cane plantations of the Dominican Republic during Easter. Gaga is a means for practitioners of Voodoo to praise their deities. Songs feature sexually provocative lyrics, others mock officials. I tied myself to the vendor on the museum grounds, blurring the line between artwork and the public. I asked museum visitors to pelt us with rubber balls, which forced us to find ways to move as one. Then I asked viewers to write solutions to the Haitian-Dominican problems. The resulting notes and commentary were put on display.
