I Am Here: Fragments, Trances, and Improvised Architectures

Exhibition Dates:May 30 – August 23, 2026

Edge Zones is pleased to present I Am Here: Fragments, Trances, and Improvised Architectures, a large-scale immersive installation by artist Charo Oquet. Recently featured in the Orlando Museum of Art's 2026 Florida Prize in Contemporary Art, on view from May 30 – August 23, 2026, the exhibition brings together paintings, sculptures, assemblages, and expansive wall drawings that explore transformation, resilience, and interconnectedness through processes of fragmentation and reconstruction.

Drawing from African diasporic spiritual traditions, the improvised architectures of the Caribbean, and symbolic forms such as circles, spirals, and umbilical ties, Oquet creates an environment that feels simultaneously like a sanctuary, dreamscape, and site of collective memory. The installation reflects the artist's nearly four decades of research into Afro-Dominican spirituality and her ongoing interest in what she describes as "the language of the sacred." Through layered surfaces, assemblage, and gestural interventions—including monumental wall drawings created directly on site—the work examines healing, adaptation, and the continual rebuilding of self and community. Ultimately, I Am Here affirms presence, radical hope, and the enduring power of transformation.

“Artists aren’t selected through an open call. Instead, the Florida Prize is built through years of studio visits, exhibition research and conversations as curators follow artists’ careers before extending an invitation. “The process to select the artists for the Florida Prize is actually something that takes several years,” says Claeysen-Gleyzon." - Miami Herald 6/11/2016
